History

Industry in Mosman Park

Historically known as Buckland Hill and Cottesloe Beach, from 1937 this area was named Mosman Park. At the turn of the 20th century, it is hard to believe now that the fertile Mosman Bay foreshore offered rich soil for farming wheat, oats and rye. Known as Samson’s Paddock, the area was so remote it was usually accessed by boat.

The Colonial River Sugar Refining Company on Owston Street produced crystal and liquid sugar from a five storey factory until the late 1990s, when the site was sold to developers.

General Motors Holden operated an assembly plant on the site of IONA Primary School (corner of Buckland Avenue and Victoria Avenue) from the 1920s until 1972.

One of the highest points in the Perth Metropolitan area, Buckland Hill is the only remaining hill of what early colonists referred to as the Seven Sisters. From the late 19th century, these seven hills were quarried for limestone which was used in Perth’s roads and buildings. Limestone from a quarry in Rocky Bay was transported by rail to build Fremantle Harbour. In the Great War, Buckland Hill made a first-class observation point for the gun batteries.

The Mosman Park Heritage Trail is a 10.5km scenic route along the Swan River and through bushland that explores some of the highlights of the area’s history.
